Time Tension

I’ve been thinking about one of the things that came up in my meeting yesterday, “What is it about the tension between the static and animated that is so fascinating?”

There’s a whole tumblr that’s been collecting/making ”living movie stills” like these since 2010:

and of course these “Cinemagraphs” by Jamie Beck that made the rounds around the internets earlier this year.

Why do we love these things? I still think part of it is this idea of “life on loop”. It’s real but somehow “stuck” on repeat.

Or maybe in our fast paced life we’re especially drawn to the possibility of slowing down or pausing time so we can take it all in.
